(Altdahn, Grafendahn, Tanstein) Dahn (Kreis Pirmasens)
Altdahn is the oldest of a
group of three castles on an extensive mountain ridge to the south-east of Dahn. It was
built in the 12th century.
The neighboring castle, Grafendahn, is from the
second half of the 13th century, Tanstein from the beginning of the 14th century. Despite
extensive destruction, the group forms one of the most impressive defensive sites in the
region. The upper castles are situated on five cliffs; a bridge linked the two plateaux of
Tanstein. Artificially constructed passageways, stairways and chambers cut into the cliffs
themselves were part of the castles, and even today convey an impression of primeval
times.
