Merzalben (Kreis Pirmasens)
The castle ruin
near the village of Merzalben is extremely well preserved. Its upper castle, with the
castle keep, residential buildings and high ring wall, were erected in the first half of
the 13th century on a tabletop-like clifftop.
The clearly bonded masonry in massive rustic-work is
typical for castles built at the time of the Hohenstaufen emperors. The lower castle (13th
to 15th centuries), which once contained seven castle guards' houses, surrounds the rock
in a broad oval.
