Pelm (Kreis Daun)
Kasselburg Castle, situated
high up on a cliff top in the Eifel mountains, is un-doubted one of the most impressive
castle ruins in Germany.
The eight-story dwelling tower from the mid 14th
century is unique. With its original steep roofs it must have made and even more towering
impression.
The remaining structural parts of the castle are more
decayed, but the upper castle, with its Romanesque castle keep, residential buildings and
chapel from the 14th century, does also convey a clear impression of the ambitions of the
lords of Blankenheim.
At the end of the 19th century, the Rhenish Railway
Company had the great tower restored as an attraction for travelers on the line from
Cologne to Trier.
